The first generation of the Freelander was conceived as the first sports utility vehicle of the brand, so it had no lockable differentials or gearboxes, but permanent 4×4 traction. The project of this vehicle was called Project CB40, which would have two types of bodies on three and five doors, and their engines were a 1.8-liter petrol engine and 136 hp, gasoline with six cylinders in 2.5-liter V and 174 HP, and two 2.0-liter diesel.
