1. 3.0 TDV6 crankshaft and bearing failure

The 3.0 TDV6 can suffer crankshaft main-bearing wear, and in the worst cases the crank itself fails — usually on engines that have been worked hard (heavy towing, sustained high revs) without strict oil-change discipline.

Land Rover acknowledged increased bearing wear under high-load conditions in a technical service bulletin, and the root cause is understood to be marginal oil supply to the rear main bearings. The warning signs are a rhythmic knock from low in the block, a drop in oil pressure, or metal glitter in the oil filter.

The point to grasp is that this is not a lottery every Disco 4 loses — it is strongly linked to abuse and skipped services. Buy one with a documented history and insist on frequent oil changes with the correct grade, and the risk drops sharply.

2. Crankshaft pulley and belt-driven oil pump

Feeding directly into the crank story above is the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) and, on the 3.0 TDV6, the belt that drives the oil pump. The pulley uses a rubber isolating layer that perishes with age and heat; when it starts to separate you'll hear a rattle from the front of the engine and the outer ring can wobble.

The oil-pump drive belt itself is a genuine service item with a replacement interval — and because it lives partly in oil, it degrades over time whether you drive the car hard or not. Neglect it and you risk losing oil pressure, which loops straight back to bearing damage.

3. Air suspension failure (the "sitting low" fault)

Carried over and refined from the Disco 3, the Discovery 4's air suspension is superb when healthy and a headache when neglected. The car rides on four air springs fed by an electric compressor, and both wear out. Tell-tale signs are the vehicle sitting low on one corner or nose-down after standing overnight, a "suspension fault" message, or the compressor running for ages without lifting the car to height.

Causes range from a perished air spring leaking air, to a tired compressor that can't hold pressure, to the compressor's drier packing up, to a height sensor feeding the module bad data.

The key thing is that this is a maintenance item, not a design disaster — the system is repairable corner by corner. A single air spring is inexpensive; the compressor is the bigger ticket, and a chronically overheating compressor usually means it has been masking a slow leak.

4. EGR and DPF (diesel particulate filter) clogging

Like every modern diesel, the TDV6 recirculates exhaust gas through the EGR system and traps soot in a diesel particulate filter. Over years of short, stop-start city driving the EGR valve and inlet gum up with oily carbon, while the DPF struggles to complete its regeneration cycle because the exhaust never gets hot enough for long enough.

The symptoms are rough running, hesitation, black smoke, poor economy, repeated regeneration warnings and eventually limp mode. It is one of the most common reasons a Disco 4 lands on our ramp.

5. Turbo actuator and turbocharger problems

The TDV6's variable-geometry turbos (the SDV6 runs a twin-turbo setup) depend on electronic actuators to move the vanes. Over time an actuator sticks or the vane mechanism gums up with soot, and the result is limp mode, a loss of power, or a whistling or fluttering noise under load.

Sometimes it is just a sticking actuator that can be freed or replaced; sometimes a turbo is genuinely worn and needs reconditioning. A diagnostic scan usually points straight at it with boost-pressure or actuator fault codes.
