The catch is that most South African Disco 5s run the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (the SD4 and D240), and that engine has a handful of well-documented weak spots you need to understand before you buy or budget for repairs.

Sorted properly, a Discovery 5 will do 300,000 km in comfort. Neglected, the Ingenium's timing chain, oil dilution and DPF issues can turn into a very big bill. 1. Ingenium 2.0 diesel timing chain wear

This is the fault that worries owners most, and rightly so. The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel uses a timing chain at the rear of the engine, and on higher-mileage or hard-worked examples the chain and its tensioner can wear.

As the chain stretches, valve timing drifts out of tolerance, and in the worst case the chain can jump teeth or fail — which on an interference engine means bent valves and serious internal damage. The tell-tale sign is a metallic rattle from the back of the engine on a cold start that settles once oil pressure builds.

The key is to catch it early. A rattle on cold start deserves an immediate inspection, not a "wait and see". When it's addressed in time, the timing chain kit is a manageable job; leave it and you're looking at an engine rebuild.

Sticking to the correct oil and service intervals is the single best prevention, because worn or diluted oil accelerates chain wear. If you're buying, insist on a full-service history and listen carefully on that first cold start of the day.

2. Oil dilution from DPF regeneration

Oil dilution is one of the most talked-about issues on the Ingenium diesel, and it's tied to how the Diesel Particulate Filter cleans itself. During a DPF regeneration the engine injects extra diesel to burn off soot, and on short, stop-start trips those regens often don't complete.

The unburnt fuel washes past the rings and ends up in the sump, thinning the engine oil. Diluted oil lubricates less well, which accelerates wear on the very timing chain and bearings you're trying to protect.

The fix is really about how the car is used and serviced. Regular longer runs let the DPF regenerate fully, and shorter oil-change intervals protect the engine on town-heavy duty cycles.

Watch for a rising oil level on the dipstick (fuel adding to the oil) and a diesel smell to the oil — both are red flags. If you mostly do short school runs, tell your workshop so they can shorten your service interval accordingly. It's cheap insurance against a far more expensive engine repair.

3. DPF and EGR clogging

Like every modern diesel, the Disco 5 recirculates exhaust gas through the EGR system and traps soot in the DPF, and both clog over time — especially on cars that live in traffic and rarely see a motorway. Symptoms are a DPF warning light, limp mode, poor economy, rough running and repeated failed regenerations. A blocked DPF that's ignored can force excessive regens, which feeds straight back into the oil-dilution problem above.

Often a proper forced regeneration, an EGR clean or a replacement EGR valve sorts it — you don't always need a new DPF, which is the expensive part. What matters is not ignoring the warning, because a fully blocked filter can leave you stranded and cost thousands.

4. Air suspension faults

The Discovery 5 rides on four-corner air suspension, and like every air-sprung Land Rover it needs maintenance as it ages. The compressor and air springs are wear items, so the classic symptoms are the car sitting low on one corner overnight, a "suspension fault" message, or the compressor running for ages and struggling to reach height. Causes range from a perished air spring, to a tired compressor, to a failed height sensor feeding the module bad data.

This is a repairable system, corner by corner, not a design disaster. A single air spring is inexpensive; the compressor is the bigger ticket but still far cheaper reconditioned than new. 5. AdBlue and SCR system problems

Later Discovery 5 diesels use AdBlue (a urea solution injected into the exhaust) to meet emissions rules, and the SCR system that manages it is a known niggle. Faulty AdBlue injectors, level sensors, pumps or NOx sensors trigger dashboard warnings and, if left, a countdown that eventually refuses to restart the engine — a legal emissions safeguard rather than a mechanical failure. Cold weather and long storage can also freeze or crystallise AdBlue and upset the system.

Don't let a warning slide, though, because the restart lockout is real and inconvenient. Keeping the tank topped with correct-spec AdBlue and sorting sensor faults promptly keeps the system happy. 6. Infotainment, electrical and software gremlins

Many of these are software issues cured by an up-to-date system update, but some come down to a tired auxiliary battery, a faulty screen module or corroded connectors after coastal or off-road use.

The sensible approach is to diagnose before you spend: a scan and a software check often solve a "faulty" screen for nothing, and a weak battery frequently explains a cluster of random electrical faults at once.
